This is a soil borne fungal disease that affects the seeds and seedlings. The stems and roots of infected young saplings rot both below and above the soil level causing the plant to die. The best way to combat this disease is to treat the seeds and soil with a fungicide such as cinnamon. Cinnamon powder can be added to the soil at the time of soil preparation as a form of prevention.
